What is Zucchini?

Zucchini squash or courgette is the most popular summer squashes in America and Europe. It is a very good source of potassium, an important intra-cellular electrolyte. Potassium is a heart friendly electrolyte and helps bring the reduction in blood pressure and heart rates by countering pressure-effects of sodium.

Including potassium-rich foods like courgettes regularly in your meals may help prevent kidney stones, hypertension, stroke and osteoporosis.

If your diet is too high in sodium, the potassium levels in your body may drop.

The soluble fibre in the skin slows down digestion, and so stabilises blood sugar and insulin levels. Soluble fibre also helps prevent constipation and relieves irritable bowel symptoms.

Courgette also plays a role in promoting a well-rounded cardiovascular health. The vitamin C content along with carotenoids stops the oxidation of bad cholesterol in the blood, thus preventing the occurrence of strokes and heart attacks.

It has antioxidants that slows down the ageing process and helps the reconstruction of brain cells.

In fact, studies show that the vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids-content of courgettes help stimulate the body in absorbing fat-soluble antioxidants, thus, helping to improve the memory.

Zucchini also provides you with lutein and zeaxanthin, two phytonutrients that belong to the carotenoid family, which is the same nutrient family that includes beta-carotene, a source of vitamin A.

Lutein and zeaxanthin promote healthy eyesight. They filter light rays as they enter your eye, helping to ensure that harmful rays can’t damage your eye tissues.

Zucchini is effective for weight management due to its healthy combination of high fiber and moisture content and a low calorie content which make it a low energy food.

Low energy foods are beneficial for weight management as they control your appetite by filling you up with water and fiber. Thus, you can have larger servings of zucchini and still keep your caloric intake low.

The high dietary fiber on the other hand enables you to shed extra pounds as it helps to burn more calories than you consume. You can buy courgettes from most big supermarkets as well as small farmers markets.
