Napa Cabbage Health Benefits

Napa cabbage is one of the popular leafy-cabbage vegetables of China. There are many varieties of cabbage, but Napa cabbage sometimes called Chinese cabbage is milder and tenderer than some of its cabbage counterparts.

Botanically this Chinese cabbage variety belongs to the Brassica family; a large class of leafy or flower-head vegetables, which also include Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and broccoli.

The plant grows to oblong shaped head consisting of tightly arranged crinkly, thick, light-green leaves with white prominent veins.

Innermost layer leaves feature light yellow colour. Napa cabbage has small levels of vitamin-A.

However, it also contains flavonoids poly phenolic compounds such as carotenes, lutein and xanthins which convert to vitamin A in the body.

It is full of vitamin K and anthocyanins that help with mental function and concentration.

These nutrients also prevent nerve damage, improving your defence against Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia.

A warm compress made with cabbage leaves can help relieve the pain of a headache. Crush cabbage leaves, place in a cloth, and apply on the forehead.

Also, drink raw cabbage juice 1-2 oz. (25-50ml) daily for chronic headaches.

The vegetable is loaded with soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, which can help control diverticular disease, irritable bowel syndrome, haemorrhoids, gallstones, hiatal hernia, high blood pressure, and stroke and may even reduce the risk of cancer.

Napa cabbage is loaded with antioxidants, important nutrients that protect the body against free radicals, which are harmful by-products produced by the body.

Napa cabbage is low in fat and calories, with almost no sodium if eaten plain.

Napa cabbage supplies 0.81 milligrams of iron per cooked cup, which is 10 percent of the 8 milligrams that men need each day, and almost 5 percent of the 18 milligrams that women should get every day.

Iron is necessary for a healthy immune system.
