Macadamia Nut Health Benefits

Macadamia nuts grow in extremely hard kernels which are very difficult to crack open. This is one of the reasons why macadamia nuts are so costly, since they are challenging to shell.


Once cracked, the shell reveals an ivory coloured kernel which is rich in oil with a buttery, creamy flavour.


The nuts may be eaten out of hand, roasted, or ground into nut butter. Macadamia is native to the East Coast rainforests of North Eastern parts of Australia.


Several parts of mineral rich, tropical and subtropical areas of Australia, Hawaiian Islands, Middle Americas, Brazil and South African regions are favourite regions where these sweet and crunchy nuts grow in abundance.


They are packed with numerous health-benefiting nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins that are essential for optimum health and wellness.


They contain small amounts of vitamin-A, and vitamin E. Both these fat-soluble vitamins possess potent anti-oxidant activities, which serve to protect cell membranes and DNA damage from harmful oxygen-free radicals.


Macadamia nuts are among the fattiest of all nuts. Surprisingly, it may be the fat in the nuts that makes them healthy.


The majority of the fat in Macadamia nuts is in the form of monounsaturated fatty acids.


A Chinese study published in 2006 in the “International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research” found that 82.6 percent of the fat in macadamia nuts is monounsaturated.


Another health benefit of macadamia comes from their high flavonoids content.


Flavonoids, which are found naturally in these plants help to prevent cells from damage and protects from environmental toxins.


These flavonoids convert into antioxidants in our body. These antioxidants search and destroy free radicals and protect our bodies from various diseases and certain types of cancer which includes breast, cervical, lung, prostrate and stomach cancer.


Macadamias contains around 7% of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber comprises of complex carbohydrates and includes many types of soluble and insoluble fiber.


Dietary fiber promotes satiety, provides roughage, aids digestion and assist in reducing constipation and several other disease related to it.
