Golden Thread Herb Health Benefits

Golden thread is a plant. It is a low, small, perennial shrub; from a slender, golden, creeping rootstock arise the basal, long-petioled, trifoliate, shiny evergreen leaves, each with three toothed leaflets, and the naked scapes, 3-6 inches high, which terminate in a small, white flower.

This herb has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over two thousand years.

It contains a number of alkaloids that have been subject to recent research.

The most well known of these alkaloids is berberine, the component that gives goldenseal and oregon grape root their yellow or gold colour, bitter taste and some of their therapeutic effect.

It has proven to be an effective antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic and antiviral herb.

It is also reported to have antiradiation effects. In a situation where you have an “over facilitated sympathetic nervous system” berberine in Coptis has been shown to be helpful.

Its main use has been as a wash or gargle for sores and ulcerations in the mouth, jaundice, throat, and even stomach.

It has been a popular folk remedy for inflammations of mucous membranes in the mouth and around the eyes.

It is said to help people combat the craving for alcohol. Improves appetite and was given to children for thrush.

Goldthread is not easy to find in the woods and North American herb companies do not normally sell this herb.

Golden thread can be found in the form of capsules, ointments, powders and also tinctures and can be used to make poultices and compresses a plant from the Berberidaceae family.

There are no known toxicities related with this herb, even though it is part of a family of toxic herbs.

People are advised to use this plant with caution. Women who are pregnant are specifically warned against using it because it has been reported to cause uterine contractions leading to miscarriage of the baby, in fact, before using any herb, contact a health care provider before use.
