Davidson Plum Health Benefits

There are many varieties of plums, one such plum is Davidson plum, which looks like a blood plum, but is very sour in taste. It has two flat seeds that are about the same size as the blood plums. 


The flesh of Davidson’s plum has a high level of anthocyanins, a potent antioxidant with a range of health benefits.


Anti-diabetic effects and reduction of obesity have been reported arising from their consumption.


There is also relatively high antioxidant activity detected in the lipophilic fractions, which unlike hydrophilic antioxidants, which do not accumulate in the body and are excreted in urine, lipophilic antioxidants penetrate the lipoprotein cell membrane more easily and therefore reach a higher level of bioavailability. 


The presence of antioxidant compounds that are active in both the hydrophilic and the lipophilic environment, within the same food source, may provide more comprehensive protection for oxidative stress. 


Davidson plum products are available in supermarkets and specialty stores in value added form like Davidson plum yoghurt, jams, sauces and drinks.


The deep dark purple fruits contain a soft juicy pulp with a sharp acidity. The aroma is earthy, like fresh beetroot with slight pickled notes.


Taste is sour with some astringency and slight bitterness.


Davidson plum contains high levels of anthocyanins, natural pigments that are strong antioxidants, which could be a source of a natural food colorant that enhances the health properties of foods in which it is used. 


It also contains lutein, a carotenoid compound that plays an important role in eye health.  Its high potassium: sodium ratio indicates potential application in foods to reduce hypertension. 


Plums also contain different vitamin B complex compounds like niacin, vitamin B6 and phenolic acid compounds that break the carbohydrates, proteins and fats molecules and metabolize them.


Plums also contain vitamin K which opposes unnecessary blood clotting all around the body.


So this maintains good blood pressure by which heart rate stays constant.


The nutritional benefits of plums are also helpful in bone metabolism and protect you from bone diseases caused due to aging.
