Cajeput Oil Health Benefits

Cajeput oil is a volatile oil obtained by steam distillation from the leaves of the myrtaceous tree cajeputi. The oil is prepared from leaves collected on a hot dry day, macerated in water, and distilled after fermenting for a night. This oil is extremely pungent, and has the odour of a mixture of turpentine and camphor.

Cajeput oil is used to treat colds, headaches, toothache, and tumours; to loosen phlegm so it can be coughed up (as an expectorant); and as a tonic.

Cajeput oil is also used either alone or in combination with other ingredients in commercially available antiseptic lotions to treat joint pain (rheumatism) and other pains.

Cajeput is antibacterial and clears congestion making it good inhalant oil for colds and sinus infections. The sweet scent of cajeput uplifts the spirit while it cleanses the air.

If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use essential oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.

Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low doses.

Cajuput oil was not only used as an ingredient for cosmetics and perfumes, it was also well known for its antiseptic properties and was a traditional remedy for the stomach, for rheumatism, cholera and as an insecticide.

It calms the digestive system and helps with colic, enteritis, dysentery, vomiting, spasms, arthritis, rheumatism and muscular aches and pains.

Cajuput does not only help with skin conditions such as acne and psoriasis, it is also used to ward off insect bites from lice and fleas. Cajuput oil can be used in vapour therapy for the respiratory tract, relieving infections and pain.

It also helps to promote clear thoughts and dispels a feeling of lethargy.

Low concentrations of cajeput oil might be safe for most people when applied in medicinal amounts to unbroken skin, but it can cause allergic reactions.
