Broad Bean Health Benefits

Broad bean or fava bean scientifically known as Vicia faba is a member of the vetch family and grows mostly in temperate regions. Broad beans are an excellent vegetable source of protein and fibre.


This may be a winning combination for weight loss. A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2010 found that overweight women on a high-protein, high-fibre diet lost more weight than those on the standard high-carbohydrate, low-fat regime that currently forms the basis of many health practitioners “healthy eating” advice.


Most beans, including broad beans, are good sources of iron. One cup of broad beans has 3 milligrams of iron, which is 32 percent of the recommended daily intake for men and 14 percent for women.


In addition to carrying oxygen throughout the body, iron-dependent enzymes sense when oxygen levels drop and initiate processes that allow the body to compensate.


Fresh braod beans are an excellent source of folates. 100 g beans provide 423 grams or 106% of folates.


Folate along with vitamin B-12 is one of the essential components of DNA synthesis and cell division.


Adequate folate in the diet around conception, and during pregnancy may help prevent neural-tube defects in the newborn baby.


In addition to being an excellent source of nutrients that support cardiovascular health, broad beans are high in dietary fiber, providing 9 g per 1/4 cup.


Legumes such as lima beans are a source of both types of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble, but are particularly rich in soluble fiber.


Consuming soluble, fiber-rich foods may help improve your blood sugar and cholesterol levels.


Broad bean can have major benefits to an individual’s health and wellbeing and have been linked with a large list of disease and obesity fighting vitamins, nutrients and compounds including: very low calorie counts, which can help maintain a healthy diet or assist with weight loss management, and hence reduce risk of heart disease and cholesterol; supporting the control of blood sugar levels; being a rich source of L-dopamin which can help prevent or treat Parkinson’s; as well as supposedly being a rather good aphrodisiac.
