Bell Pepper Health Benefits

Bell pepper is not only an excellent source of carotenoids, but also a source of over 30 different members of the carotenoid nutrient family.

A recent study from Spain took a close look vitamin C, vitamin E, and six of these carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin) in all commonly eaten foods and found that only two vegetables contained at least two-thirds of all the listed nutrients.

Both hot and sweet peppers contain substances that have been shown to increase the body’s heat production and oxygen consumption for about 20 minutes after eating.

This is great news; it means your body is burning extra calories, which helps weight loss.

Bell pepper, or sweet pepper, is the most popular of the chili peppers in the Capsicum annuum family.

It is a fruit pod of small perennial shrub in the nightshade or Solanaceae family, in the genus, capsicum.

Bell pepper contains an impressive list of plant nutrients that are found to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.

Unlike in other fellow chili peppers, it has very less calories and fats. 100 g provides just 31 calories.

Bell pepper has adequate levels of essential minerals. Some of the main minerals in it are iron, copper, zinc, potassium, manganese, magnesium, and selenium.

Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

Bell pepper come in a variety of colours: Green and purple are more pungent and taste slightly bitter.

Red, orange and yellow are milder flavoured, sweeter, and pleasant to the taste. The red peppers are really green peppers which have been left to ripen on the vine. So green is simply the unripe version of the red.

Each colour of the bell peppers has different phytochemicals and provides different nutrients.

All the coloured capsicums contain very high anti-oxidant and phytonutrients that are especially helpful in preventing cancers of the bladder, cervix, and pancreas and prostate.
