Babaco Health Benefits

Fruits are important for our everyday lives in order to keep healthy, one such fruit is Babaco. The fruit is pentagonal in shape, therefore giving it the scientific name of Carica pentagona.

Also called the Mountain Papaya, or Champagne Fruit, the Babaco is an unusual Papaya relative with a unique flavour. Babaco fruits ripen one at a time throughout the year.

The fruits average 8 to 10 inches long and weigh 1 to 2 pounds each, but can potentially be 4 pounds.

They ripen to a bright golden yellow, with a terrific, fruity aroma!  The fruit is star-shaped when sliced, so it makes an attractive addition to platters.  You can eat the entire fruit, including the thin skin.

The skin is yellow and the fruit has juicy yellow flesh without seeds. The taste is fresh and sweet and can be defined as a combination of strawberry and melon. Nutrients in babaco include useful amounts of Vitamin C and potassium.

It’s a good addition to a low-sodium diet because potassium content is around 100 times as much as sodium.

Other nutrients include Vitamins A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), Niacin (B3), phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron. The Incas used Babaco to treat obesity and stress problems.

The enzyme papain emulsifies fats and breaks down cholesterol and protein. Papain is an ingredient of commercially produced meat tenderizers. Because of its low sugar content, it is perfect for slimmers.

It is often pureed into smoothies and other fruit beverages.

The flesh is used as a desert ingredient in pies, syrups and confections. Babaco pairs well with other tropical fruits such as pineapple and mangoes, peaches, chiles, coconut, poultry, ginger, avocados, prosciutto, ham and strawberries. Babaco fruit grows in clusters on evergreen shrubs that appear like small palm trees.

Each fruit ripens one at a time. Babaco prefers warm humid weather and does not tolerate strong winds and hot dry conditions.
