Alligator Pepper Health Benefits

Alligator pepper a member of the ginger family, is a North African spice and is used in Africa not only in food preparation but also in cultural practices, such as medicine and as an accompaniment to kola nut.


It has a hot spicy taste and aroma which is popularly used in West African soups and stews.

Pregnant women are not excluded from eating this widely used substance. There is a need to know the danger; pregnant women are exposed to, when this substance is used as an ingredient in food or served during religious rites and naming ceremonies.


Hence, this investigation aims to find out if granulated alligator pepper poses any health risk to pregnant women especially in their first trimester. It also aims to determine other effects of alligator pepper in pregnancy if any.


In West African folk medicine, grains of paradise are valued for their warming and digestive properties.


A report has it that in Ghana, the seeds of alligator pepper are chewed to cure dysentery, as a sedative against toothache, anti-rheumatism, and migraine and to cure fever.
