Tea Tree Oil Health Benefits

Tea tree essential oil steam distilled from the Australian plant Melaleuca. Tea tree oil is usually clear to very pale golden in colour and it exudes a fresh, camphor-like scent and is dubbed a “medicine cabinet in a bottle”.

 

Essential oils have been used for healing and medicinal purposes for centuries and most certainly long before we had pills, capsules and big pharmacy to take care of our medical problems.

 

Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tea tree. The tea tree was named by eighteenth century sailors, who made tea that smelled like nutmeg from the leaves of the tree growing on the swampy southeast Australian coast.

 

To help reduce pain associated with the swelling of arthritis, add 20 drops of tea tree oil to 2 ounces of grape seed or other carrier oil. Massage into affected area 2-3 times a day.

 

Add a drop to your normal cleansing routine or dab a very small amount on acne breakouts. You can also add 20 – 40 drops of the oil to your regular face wash.

 

Use topically, either massaging into the reflex points of the feet, adding several drops to a bath or cautiously applying over an infected site.

 

Tea tree oil is known for its topical antiseptic and anti-fungal treatment or infection-reducing benefits.

 

It also has antibiotic properties and helps aid against aliments such as skin infections, rashes, burns, dandruff and much more.

 

Add a few drops in your washing machine to scent your clothes. Also, if you forgot to put the clothes in the dryer, run again with tea tree oil to remove mildew.

 

You can also scent wool dryer balls with tea tree oil. Despite its benefits as an herbal medicine, tea tree oil doesn’t come without side effects, and it’s important to use the oil correctly or you could end up in the hospital.

 

Some reactions associated with tea tree oil are rather severe, and while it can be used to treat allergies, it can also cause them.
