Tamarind Health Benefits

The tamarind fruit is encased within a brown pod. Inside the pod of the tamarind is a soft, brown pulp with hard-coated black seeds. It is this pulp that people eat to get all the nutritional and health benefits of the tamarind.

The pulp of the tamarind has a very sour taste when it is young, but as it ripens the pulp gets sweeter.

Tamarind fruit contains certain health benefiting essential volatile chemical compounds, minerals, vitamins and dietary fiber. Fiber helps to overcome constipation and keep to smooth digestion.

Its pulp has been used in many traditional medicines as a laxative, digestive, and as a remedy for biliousness and bile disorders. Tamarind is a fruit that is rich in calcium.

Calcium (with the help of vitamin K) has a major role in the process of blood clotting in wounds. Tamarind is also a good source of protein. Protein can produce antibodies that help eradicate viruses and bacteria.

Tamarind is a good source of antioxidants that fight against cancer. Tamarind contains carotenes, vitamin C, flavonoids and the B-vitamins. It is also used to treat colds and fever. Women sometimes use tamarind to treat pregnancy-related nausea.

It is given to children to treat intestinal worms. The heated juice is used to cure conjunctivitis. Eye drops made from tamarind seeds may be a treatment for dry eye syndrome.

Tamarind reduces fevers and provides protection against colds. Make an infusion by taking one ounce of pulp, pour one quart of boiling water over this and allow steeping for one hour, strain and drink tepid with little honey to sweeten.

This will bring down temperature by several degrees. Tamarind is also used as a gargle for sore throats and as a drink to bring relief from sunstroke.

It is a good source of antioxidants and helps in curbing the growth of cancerous products in the body by preventing free radicals from being formed which conduct unwanted reactions in the body.
