Poke Root Oil Health Benefits

Poke root, also known as pokeroot and poke-root, commonly comes from a plant with the scientific name Phytolacca decandra that is native to North America.

All parts of this plant, including the root, contain toxins that can cause serious side effects if ingested, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, convulsions, muscle spasms, and in severe cases death.

Many medical authorities and medical professionals advise against using any amount of the Phytolacca decandra plant, in any form, because of its toxicity.

Poke root oil is made by grinding up fresh Poke root (it can easily be cultivated in the garden, but gloves must be worn when handling the fresh root pulp) in Olive oil and infusing for 2 weeks.

Then pressing and filtering. Bottle the oil for future use and store in a cool place.

Traditionally Poke Root oil has been applied locally to ease inflamed or swollen breast tissue.

Do not apply Poke Root oil to broken skin. If a rash occurs, dilute with olive oil and reduce applications to once daily or discontinue use.

Women suffering from uterine fibroids or endometriosis can benefit from pokeweed’s healing properties as well.

Symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, particularly breast pain, can also be alleviated.

Poke root can be infused in oil and used as a belly rub, or taken internally as a tincture in very low dosages.

Start with one or two drops of fresh root tincture in water once a day.

The dosage of tincture can be gradually increased, but should never exceed ten drops per day.

If you suffer from lymphatic cancer, do not use this herb. Large doses may have narcotic effects and slow the heart rate and decrease blood pressure, so always use caution.

Side effects may include prolonged vomiting, convulsions, muscle spasms and irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.

Pregnant and nursing women should not take poke root oil without consulting a health care provider.
