Loquat Health Benefits

Loquat, a member of Rosaceae family of fruits, loquats have similar taste and flavour as that of apples; tart, and sweet with a pleasant aroma. The Loquat tree is a moderately sized tree and can grow up to thirty feet.

 

The Loquat leaves are evergreen and are five to twelve inches long and three to four inches wide. These beautiful leaves are glossed and dark-green.

 

Fresh fruit is very rich in potassium and some B-complex vitamins such as folates, vitamin B-6 and niacin and contain small amounts of vitamin-C. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.

 

Pectin has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing its re-absorption in the colon by binding bile acids resulting in its excretion from the body.

 

Loquat fruit are often used as food and their skin can be peeled and eaten. They are often combined with other fruits. Loquat fruit and leaves have high concentrations of Calcium, Phosphorus, Iron, Vitamin A and Ascorbic Acid. Organic Loquat Leaf is often used to make medicinal teas.

 

The fruit is sometimes used as a sedative and is thought to reduce vomiting and thirst when ingested. Leaves can relieve diarrhoea, depression and counteract intoxication.

 

Leaves can also reduce swelling. One of Loquat leaf’s oldest reported benefits is the reduction of skin inflammation. And when Loquat leaf is used in topical cream, it can combat oedema and histamine-induced skin contraction.
