Lettuce Health Benefits

Lactuca sativa or lettuce is a small size annual plant flourishes in well-draining, humus soil. Its leaves exude milk like fluid (sap) when cut, and hence their name derived from Latin, lactuca for milk. Lettuce is a live food with its rich vitamin content, especially the antiscorbutic vitamin C. It is bulky, low in calories but high in nutrient value.

It is rich in mineral salts with the alkaline elements greatly predominating.

Lettuce contains considerable amount of iron and supplies a good form of vegetable haemoglobin. It can, therefore, be used as a good tonic food for anaemia.

The iron obtained in this way is absorbed by the body to a much greater degree than the inorganic iron tonic found in drug stores.

Fresh leaves contain good amounts folatesand vitamin C. Folates require for DNA synthesis and therefore, vital in prevention of the neural tube defects in-utero fetus during pregnancy.

Vitamin C is a powerful natural antioxidant; regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals.

It is also rich in B-complex group of vitamins like thiamine, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), riboflavin. Lettuce, which has such a good proportion of nutrients with such less fat and calories, is preferred as a perfect weight loss-inducing veggie.

The compresses of this vegetable are effective against several skin problems. Simply boil two salads of the lettuce leaf in 1 litre of water for about 20 minutes. The resulting liquid can be used as a compress on the face and other body parts.

This compress can help in curing acne and psoriasis by cleaning the skin. To be effective, compresses should be at room temperature and kept for 10 minutes.

Just like the rest of the body, your hair also needs adequate supply of nutrients, vitamins and minerals for their growth and health. Being highly nutritious, lettuce offers a range of benefits for your hair.
