Hominy Vegetable Health Benefits

Hominy is popularly used to make porridge especially in the Caribbean. Hominy is basically a food made from kernels of corn which are soaked in an alkali solution of either lime or lye.

Hominy can be made with either white or yellow corn, specifically maize, which is the type of corn used in making corn meal and other grain products as opposed to sweet corn, which is the vegetable that can be eaten on the cob.

The process for preparing dried hominy requires soaking the hominy grains for about eight hours and then simmering for an additional hour or two.

Hominy is then ground into grits, which are boiled in water and served as a breakfast cereal or side dish.

Oatmeal is made from harvested oat grain. Once the hull is removed, the oats are either ground into steel-cut oats or rolled for quick-cooking oatmeal.

Hominy is low in fat, which makes it a good choice on low-fat diets. While low-carbohydrate diets are popular, research suggests that limiting fat intake may be a more effective dieting strategy.

Another benefit of hominy is that it is high in fiber. Each cup of hominy provides 4 g of fiber, a nutrient that can help you lose weight because it stimulates satiety.

Fiber is important for a number of other roles, as it also aids in the regulation of your blood sugar levels, encourages a healthy digestive system and may help reduce your cholesterol levels.

A cup of cooked grits contains 182 calories and 1 gram of fat, giving you 9 calories from fat.

Although the same amount of cooked oatmeal has 166 calories, it contains 3 grams of fat per serving, increasing the amount of fat calories to 27.

If you are trying to lose weight, eating grits is a better way to get a full feeling without consuming excessive fat calories.
