Henbane Herb Health Benefits

Henbane has been used medicinally since the time of Pliny in ancient Greece. Henbane’s continued popularity today is as a psychoactive herb. The leaves of both the annual and biennial plant can be used, but leaves of biennial plants are considered to be superior.

 

The seeds are collected in August right after they have become mature. They have the same medicinal properties as the leaves but stronger.

 

Henbane has been used as a medicine since ancient times and had a strong reputation as a magical herb that was for instance used in love potions and to induce hallucinations.

 

The main healing properties of the herb are due to the sedative, analgesic and antispasmodic effect the substance hyoscyamine.

 

Henbane was used specifically for pain in the urinary tract, especially in the case of kidney stones.

 

The sedative and antispasmodic effect makes it a valuable remedy for Parkinson’s disease, where it relieves tremors and stiffness in the early stages of the disease.

 

The herb has also been used for toothache and nervous disorders such as mania and hysteria.

 

The stem and leaves of this herb are covered with minute hair-like bristles.

 

Henbane produces blossoms during the period of July-August. The shape of the flowers resembles bells and they grow to about one-fourth inch in length.

 

The petals have a mustard-yellow hue with purplish-brown veins and throats. The seeds of henbane are sheltered in capsules or pods that are about half-an-inch in length.

 

When the leaves are mashed, they exude a potent narcotic smell, something comparable to that of tobacco.

 

Henbane is useful is lessening the excessive secretion of mucus and saliva along with other digestive juices.

 

Similar to its close relative, the deadly nightshade, this herb also dilates the pupils.

 

Hyoscine is among the active elements enclosed by henbane and it is occasionally employed in the form of an alternative for opium.
