Grapefruit Benefits

Grapefruit is a citrus fruit. People use the fruit, oil from the peel, and extracts from the seed as medicine. This juicy fruit contains citric acid, natural sugars, and essential oils like limonene, pinene and citral. It has high amounts of vitamin C, and smaller amounts of vitamin A, B complex, E and K.

Grapefruits usually range in diameter from four to six inches and include both seed and seedless and pink and white varieties.

Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C, a vitamin that helps to support the immune system.

Vitamin C-rich foods like grapefruit may help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms; over 20 scientific studies have suggested that vitamin C is a cold-fighter.

Vitamin C also prevents the free radical damage that triggers the inflammatory cascade, and is therefore also associated with reduced severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

As free radicals can oxidize cholesterol and lead to plaques that may rupture causing heart attacks or stroke, vitamin C is beneficial to promoting cardiovascular health.

A diabetic can safely eat a grapefruit. In fact, more consumption of this fruit will help reduce the starches and sweets in the system.

If you have a tendency towards diabetes, consume more grapefruit juice to prevent it.

This juice helps to promote digestion by increasing the flow of gastric juices. Eat the fruit together with its albedo and pith for their extra fiber that aids bowel movements.

Drinking a freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice helps relieve sore throats and soothes coughs.

Grapefruit is high in enzymes that burn fats, has high water content and has less sodium.

A combination of these three characteristics makes grapefruit a perfect food for increasing your body’s metabolism.

Try eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice every day and you will notice how quickly you lose those extra pounds.
