Feijoas Health Benefits

Feijoas are an exotic, divinely-flavoured fruit native to South America. Botanically, it is a small tree or a shrub in the family of Myrtaceae. The fruit is oval in shape and approximately 20mm to 80mm long and a dull green colour with a whitish bloom.

 

The skin is thin and generally inedible, and encloses a whitish layer of granular flesh and a central mass of translucent jelly-like pulp. Each fruit contains 20 to 30 very small seeds.

 

The fruit is very rich source of soluble dietary fiber, which makes it a good bulk laxative. The fiber content helps protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time to toxins as well as binding to cancer-causing chemicals in the colon.

 

Since feijoa is abundant with vegetable fiber, it is suggested for the treatments for bowel problems that usually takes place while pregnant and after birth.

 

It is used in cakes, muffins, desserts, salsas, sauces, jams, jellies and curries. Fresh Feijoas are high in antioxidants to fight free radicals. Free radicals are a major cause of premature aging, disease and cancer. The better your diet, the better you will look and feel.

 

Feijoas are delicious in fruit salads and compotes and are especially complementary when mixed with oranges, banana, papaya, strawberries, ginger and lime.

Feijoa is also commonly called pineapple guava since it resembles to a guava in looks and the pulp tastes like a pineapple.
