Cloudberry

Cloudberries are from the rose family of plants and therefore are closely related to strawberries, raspberries, cherries and apples. It is also known as yellow-berry, salmon berry, and baked apple berry. 

 

The plants might seem small but they have a large underground root and runners system and so one plant can occupy a large area. Cloudberries grow in swamp areas in the Arctic on mountains, on plains and even by the sea. The fruit ripens into orange but some berries can maintain a reddish tinge.

 

They have many seeds and are similar to a raspberry in that respect, but larger in comparison to the size of the fruit. These are a good source of vitamin Cand were favoured by Norwegian sailors and North American Eskimos for the prevention of scurvy.

 

The berry harvests of Scandinavia were and remain an important resource for self-sufficient farming communities, adding variety to the diet through the nine months of the year when the ground is frozen and nothing grows. In markets of northern Scandinavia, cloudberries are sold for use in preserves, tarts, and other confections. 

 

Cloudberry benefits are considered to be highly beneficial to the skin, since they contain carotene, Omega 3 and Omega 6, Vitamin E, A, and C, antioxidants, and phytosterols. Frequent intake of cloudberries not only helps strengthen skin, but also fights oxidative damage. 

 

Cloudberry plant can be made into excellent tea, which is incredibly effective in curing urinary tract infections.Cloudberries are incredibly good for the wound healing as well. They prevent many infections and colds, slow down aging, and boost the immune system of your body.

 

In Sweden, they are also used as an ice cream topping. In Canada, cloudberries are used to flavour a special beer.It acts as an inbuilt natural preservative due to a good content of benzoic acid.Cloudberry aids in proper digestion and works up the appetite. The cloudberry also has anti-inflammatory, spasmolitic, sudorific and diuretic properties.

 

It is applied if there is a urinary bladder disease or an internal haemorrhage. It is also excellent to mix cloudberry with honey and give it to debilitated patients in order to promote general wellness.
