Canola Oil Health Benefits

Canola oil comes from pressed canola seeds also known as oil rapeseeds. Both rapeseed and canola plants are, therefore, belongs to the same genus of the crucifer family called Brassica, the large family of plants, which also includes turnip, mustard, brussels sprouts and cabbage just to name a few.

Canola oil is light yellow and has a neutral taste. In general, canola seeds are pressed either by traditional cold-pressing method or in large scale, by hexane extraction method.

Canola oil is also very high in healthier unsaturated fats. It’s higher in the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) than any other oil except flaxseed oil.

ALA is particularly important to have in your diet because your body can’t make it.Canola oil is also high in monounsaturated fats, which are healthy. These are the fats found in large amounts in olive oil.

Canola oil is high in calories. However, its high-calorie content comes from better fats.

It is especially rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) like oleic acid which constitutes about 61% of total fats that help to lower LDL or “bad cholesterol” and increase HDL or “good cholesterol” in the blood.

Research studies suggest that Mediterranean diet that is very rich in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favouring healthy blood lipid profile.

With its neutral taste and high heat tolerance, canola oil works well in salad dressings, sauces and marinades, and it also provides a good base for sautéing, grilling or stir-frying meat and vegetables.

For bakers, canola fulfils dual purposes, as both a substitute for solid fats, such as butter, and as an effective non-stick agent for pans.

One serving of canola oil each day will deliver about a quarter of all the vitamin E you need. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects your body’s fats and proteins from free radical damage.
