Blackcurrant Health Benefits

Blackcurrants are full of health promoting antioxidants, called anthocyanins, which give blackcurrants their distinctive dark purple colour. The darker the blackcurrant, the more anthocyanins it contains and the better it is for you.

Currants are native to central and northern Europe and Siberia.

Black currants are very good in vitamin A, and flavonoids, anti-oxidants such as beta-carotene, zea-xanthinand cryptoxanthin levels. 100 g fresh berries provide 230 IU of vitamin A. These compounds are known to have antioxidant properties.

Vitamin A is also required for maintaining integrity of mucus membranes and skin, and essential for healthy eye-sight. Furthermore, consumption of natural fruits rich in flavonoids anti-oxidants helps to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Tea from the leaves of the black currant plant is very useful too. Two leaves can be cut up into tiny pieces and then two teaspoons of these leaves are then boiled into some water.

Black currants are used by herbalists to cure diarrhoea, tonsillitis, whooping cough and gum disease.

Black currants are known for their high content of vitamin C, GLA (Gamma-Linoleic Acid) and potassium. They contain twice the amount of potassium found in bananas, 4 times the vitamin C in oranges and twice the antioxidants in blueberries.

Women use black currant seed oil for treating symptoms of menopause, premenstrual syndrome, painful periods, and breast tenderness.

Black currants are also beneficial for those suffering from menopause as they tend to intensify the weak peripheral circulation and also eliminate the cholesterol, waste and toxins from the blood.

Black currants also help women suffering from menopause by improving their blood circulation.

Health benefits and therapeutic uses of the black currant also make it an excellent natural cure for kidney related problems in an individual as the dried leaves of the black currant plant are known to promote flow of urine, work against the formation of bladder stones and also disinfect the urine especially when consumed on a regular basis as a cleansing tea.
