Asparagus Health Benefits

Asparagus is a perennial garden plant belonging to the Lily family (Liliaceae) which includes leeks, garlic and onions. It has a spear top with bud-like, compact and pointed head. Asparagus is packed with antioxidants, ranking among the top fruits and vegetables for its ability to neutralize cell-damaging free radicals.

This, according to preliminary research, may help slow the aging process. It contains high levels of the amino acid asparagine, which serves as a natural diuretic, and increased urination not only releases fluid but helps rid the body of excess salts.

This is especially beneficial for people who suffer from oedema (an accumulation of fluids in the body’s tissues) and those who have high blood pressure or other heart-related diseases.

Asparagus is very rich in dietary fiber. A one hundred gram serving of asparagus contains approximately 2.1 grams of dietary fiber.

Asparagus contains a unique carb called inulin, which remains undigested until it reaches the large intestine, where it helps to absorb nutrients better, and cut the risk of colon cancer.

It has antioxidants, including one called glutathione, which is known to protect the skin from sun damage, pollution and the effects of aging.

Other uses include treatment of joint pain (rheumatism), hormone imbalances in women, dryness in the lungs and throat, constipation, nerve pain (neuritis), AIDS, cancer, and diseases caused by parasites.

Some people apply asparagus directly to the skin for cleaning the face, drying sores, and treating acne.

The high content of folate, calcium and other minerals in asparagus are important in reducing the risk of birth defects and low birth weight.

The diuretic effect of the juice is also a big help in reducing water retention in pregnant women.

Drink a small amount of asparagus juice mixed with raw honey three times a day daily to strengthen a weak or enlarged heart.
