Acerola Health Benefits

Acerola fruit is a bright red cherry-like fruit containing several small seeds. Mature fruits are soft and pleasant tasting. Acerola is native to South America, southern Mexico, and Central America, but is now also being grown as far north as Texas and in subtropical areas of Asia, such as India.

Acerola berry is very low in calories. 100 g fresh berries provide just 32 calories. Nonetheless, these bright colour berries compose several health benefiting components such as vitamins, and pigment anti-oxidants that contribute immensely toward optimum health and wellness.

It is known for being extremely rich in vitamin C, almost as much as camu camu, although it also contains vitamins A, B1, B2, and B3, as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoid, which provide important nutritive value and have antioxidant uses.

Acerola is used to treat or prevent scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is known to strengthen the immune system and build collagen cells.

It also supports the respiratory system. Vitamin C is known to be an effective antioxidant. The antioxidative qualities of acerola make it an ideal ingredient in skin care products to fight cellular aging.

Although little is known about the safety of long-term use of acerola extract, there is some concern that oral intake of acerola may cause certain side effects (including nausea, diarrhoea, headache, redness of skin and kidney stones).

When used in fruit salads it is one of those things that keep bananas and apples from changing colour, the same way lime or lemon juice does.

The use of acerola as a natural herbal remedy is a common practice in its native areas of Brazil. It has a wide range of uses associated with its reputed curative effects in humans.

Acerola also contains mineral salts, which help return minerals to stressed areas of skin. Its mucilage and protein content also provide hydration to the skin.
